Baccarat looks calm until the third card appears and everyone at the table sits forward. The rule that decides it is fixed, mechanical and easy to follow once someone has explained it. You will not make any drawing decisions yourself. This article explains the rule so the game stops feeling like magic.

Totals and naturals first

Each hand adds up card values and keeps only the last digit. Aces count as one, tens and face cards count as zero. So a seven and a six make 13, which counts as 3. If either side starts with 8 or 9, called a natural, the round ends there and no more cards are drawn.

That is the first thing to watch for. If neither hand has a natural, the third card rules apply.

The Player draws first

The Player hand follows a simple rule. With a total of 0 to 5 it draws a third card. With 6 or 7 it stands. That is the whole rule for the Player side, and it is automatic.

  • Player total 0 to 5: draws a card.
  • Player total 6 or 7: stands.
  • Either side at 8 or 9: natural, no draw.

The Banker follows a table

The Banker rule is slightly more involved because it depends on whether the Player drew, and on the value of the Player's third card. If the Player stands, the Banker draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. If the Player drew, the Banker's decision depends on its own total and the Player's third card.

Lower Banker totals draw almost always. A Banker total of 7 stands. Totals in the middle range depend on which card the Player received. The dealer or the system applies the table, so you do not need to memorise it, but understanding the shape helps you see why the Banker draws more often in some spots.

Suppose the Player hand starts with a 4 and a 2, total 6. The Player stands. The Banker has 3 and 1, total 4. With the Player standing, the Banker draws on 0 to 5, so the Banker takes a card. Now suppose the Player started with 2 and 3, total 5. The Player draws a third card, say a 6, making 1. The Banker then looks at its own total and the Player's third card to decide.

Try a few hands on paper and the pattern settles in quickly. It takes about ten minutes to follow a table smoothly, and after that the game becomes easier to watch calmly. Calm is useful in baccarat, where fast betting rounds encourage impulsive stakes.

What it means for your bets

The rule is built into the house edge of each bet. The Banker bet usually has a lower edge than the Player bet, and commission is normally charged on Banker wins to compensate. The Tie bet pays more and loses more. We do not quote the exact percentages because games differ, so read the table rules on the live game. See live baccarat for bets and payouts.

Myths to ignore

No pattern on a scoreboard tells you what the next card will be. Roads and streaks look meaningful because humans love patterns. The cards do not remember. If a table has produced five Banker wins, the sixth hand is as independent as the first.

Read roulette streaks for a similar trap and the illusion of control for why it feels convincing.

Playing with a plan

Choose a flat stake and a session budget. Do not raise your stake after a loss. If the budget is spent, stop. The best use of the third card rule is understanding what you are watching, not predicting it.

Remember too that live tables show cards on a stream, so the dealer is applying the rule while you watch. If a draw ever looks odd, check the table rules rather than assuming a mistake. Dealers and systems are following the same fixed table every time.

Your questions

No. The rules are fixed and applied by the dealer or the system.

Why does the Banker sometimes stand on 5?

Because the table depends on the Player's third card. In some cases a 5 stands.

Can the rule be used to win?

No. It is built into the odds. Knowing it only helps you follow the hand.

What is a natural?

A starting total of 8 or 9 on either hand. The round ends immediately.

No. Each hand is independent.
