Blackjack is the one casino game where your decisions change the cost, which tempts people into thinking they can beat it with feel. This guide is independent and not run by BDBAJEE. We could not confirm the live blackjack tables when we checked on 7 November 2026, so look in the live section yourself. Below are the rules as they generally work and the decisions worth getting right.
How a hand is played
You and the dealer are each dealt two cards. Number cards count face value, picture cards count ten, and an ace counts one or eleven, whichever helps. You act first: take another card (hit), keep your total (stand), double your bet for one more card (double down), or split a pair into two hands. Go over 21 and you lose immediately. The dealer then plays a fixed routine, typically drawing until reaching a set total.
A natural, an ace with a ten-value card on the first two cards, usually pays more than even money. The exact payout is on the table's rules panel and varies by table.
Basic decisions that matter
A basic strategy chart exists for every set of rules and is the best use of any thinking time. The broad principles are simple.
- Stand on a firm hard 17 or more.
- Hit a hard total of eleven or less is rarely wrong; doubling on eleven is often right.
- Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.
- Treat the dealer's weak upcards (small numbers) as a reason to stand on mid totals.
What to skip
Insurance, which is a side bet against the dealer having a natural, is generally a poor bet over time. Side bets such as pairs and 21+3 pay well but cost more than the main game. And remember that the live game is dealt from a shoe at a pace you do not control, with a timer to act, so decide your plan before cards arrive.
Counting cards does not help meaningfully at live tables, which reshuffle the shoe often and use several decks.
Money rules for fast tables
A hand takes less than a minute. Decide a flat stake and a number of hands. Do not increase the bet to recoup losses; that is the single most common way to turn a small loss into a large one. For a simpler card game, see baccarat; on the rule side, our article on blackjack surrender covers one option some tables offer. The wider choice is on the live casino hub.
